Component Information System Release 9
Release Notes

November, 1998

Most of the information contained in these release notes is not included in the Capture manuals or online help. Please read the notes carefully to see if any apply to your designs.

OrCAD Capture CIS (Component Information System) is an advanced version of Capture that allows individuals or design groups to connect to a centralized part database and an Internet-based component catalog. Connecting to complete part information early in the design process helps you create first-pass complete and correct bills of materials, custom reports and netlists. It also promotes reuse of existing components, which can save thousands of dollars. OrCAD Capture CIS Release 9 delivers the option to plug in OrCAD Express® and OrCAD PSpice® capabilities.

These release notes are divided into the following sections:

Installation notes

This section gives you information concerning:

The internet component assistant (ICA)

The following are commonly asked questions about the installation of the internet component assistant (ICA):

Q: Which Release 9 products ship with the ICA enabled?
A: Only Capture CIS.

Q: Are there any special system configuration requirements for the successful installation of the ICA?
A: Yes. There are two requirements: (1) Microsoft's Internet Explorer 4 is the only supported Internet browser and needs to be present on the local PC, along with an active Internet connection. (2) You must have access to a licensed version of Capture CIS Release 9.

Q: Where do I get a copy of Internet Explorer 4?
A: You will be prompted to install Internet Explorer 4 as an option during OrCAD Capture CIS Release 9 installation. If you need a language compatible version that is not provided as an option during install, our International Channel Partners can assist you to obtain the version you need. Contact your International Channel Partner at http://www.orcad.com/company/company_f.htm. Language compatible versions are also available from the Microsoft Web site at http://www.microsoft.com/ie/.

Q: Will OrCAD's installation of Internet Explorer 4 change my desktop?
A: No. The OrCAD installation includes only the Internet Explorer 4.01 browser, Java™ Support, and DirectX multimedia technologies (the whole installation requires about 13 MB of disk space). The installation does not include True Web Integration (Active Desktop™).

Q: Does Internet Explorer 4 have to be set as my primary browser?
A: No. The installation will not change the configuration of any other browsers you have installed on your system. You can keep Netscape, for example, as your primary browser.

Q: Do I need a separate serial number for access to ICselector?
A: No. Your OrCAD Capture CIS product serial number supports one year of access to the ICselector through ICA, from the time of purchase. If you have access to a licensed version of Capture CIS and a valid support software contract (ESO in North America), then you should have access to the ICA.

Q: I am using a licensed version of OrCAD CIS and have an active Internet connection, but I still have been denied access into the ICA. What should I do?
A: There might be a problem with the activation status of your OrCAD serial number. You can check this yourself by visiting http://orcad.aspectonline.com and doing the following:

  1. Select LOGIN TO SERVICE.

  2. Enter your OrCAD Capture CIS serial number. Write down the error message that displays.

  3. Email your serial number, name, and company name with the text of the error message to techsupport@orcad.com.

Viewing OrCAD Layout footprints in Capture CIS

Capture CIS supports the viewing of PCB footprints created in OrCAD Layout products.

During the installation of Capture CIS Release 9, the setup will look for a registry entry with the directory location of an OrCAD Layout Release 9 installation. If a Release 9 entry is not found, the setup will look for a registry entry for version 7.2 OrCAD Layout Plus. If no entries are found for Release 9 or version 7.2, you will be prompted to find the directory (local or on a network) where your PCB footprints are located.

However, you can select a preferred Layout footprint directory after installation. To do so, you will need to edit or add the following entry in your CAPTURE.INI file:

    [LAYOUT FOOTPRINTS]
    Dir0=
Where Dir0= points to the directory where the footprints are located that you want CIS to display. You can also use UNC names for this directory location.

For example: You have created a directory on your network server to which you have moved all your company's approved master PCB footprint libraries. The path to the directory is x:\libraries\footprints. The entry in your CAPTURE.INI would look like this:

    [LAYOUT FOOTPRINTS]
    Dir0=x:\libraries\footprints

What's new

This section gives you information concerning:

Variant designs

Maintain and control a multitude of assembly configurations from within a single design file. Specify which parts are not present for each board assembly. Determine substitutions for components based on your geographic or model-specific requirements without leaving your current design. With Capture Release 9, the number of variations on the core schematic design are unlimited; each variant can be previewed, printed, status checked and reported using either the CIS standard Bill of Materials or the new advanced reporting capabilities supplied through Seagate's Crystal Reports.

Internet component catalog with over 200,000 ready-to-use parts

The Capture CIS internet component assistant feature connects you to an online catalog, which now has over 200,000 ICs complete with manufacturer datasheets and schematic symbols. With the internet component assistant, you specify the key parameters and it returns a set of candidate components. You can then review the datasheets, look at the schematic symbols, and even access distributor pricing information where available. Once you've found the component you want, the New Part Wizard helps you create a temporary part in your part database and place the part in your design.

Advanced reporting using Crystal Reports

Prevent late surprises by creating customized reports that help you analyze information about the parts in your design as early as possible. Create reports that contain the complete set of data for which you need clarification, including design costs, cheaper alternatives, verification of lead-times, reliability issues, and potential obsolete part problems, to name a few. Sort, subtotal and generate presentation quality reports in one easy step.

Capture CIS can access and analyze current design data using personally selected and corporate shared generic templates that you create using the popular Crystal Reports reporting package. Capture CIS has an embedded report viewing and printing engine so anyone can print, preview, or save the generated reports. You can then publish your reports through integrated email services, across the Internet/Intranet or output files in nearly every popular format, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and Exchange, as well as Lotus Notes, and any ODBC or HTML compatible package.

With Capture CIS Release 9, you can design any template you can imagine using Seagate's Crystal Reports Report Designer. Visit our web page at http://www.orcad.com/cis/crystal.htm to learn more about Seagate Crystal Reports.

User interface improvements

To better support your design entry flow, the CIS menu commands have been dispersed throughout the Capture menu. The individual windows in the CIS explorer window can now be docked, undocked, dragged, and hidden independently. The configuration of the windows when viewing the Preferred Part Database and the internet component assistant are now independently managed, giving you a smoother transition between the two environments.

Simplified packaging

With Release 9 all versions of PSpice and Express can be accessed from within Capture CIS. OrCAD's new Interchange™ Architecture simplifies packaging and licensing so that these applications can "plug into" any Capture CIS product once they're installed. Existing Express CIS customers under maintenance will receive Capture CIS and Express Release 9.

Floating license support

To give our customers more flexibility, OrCAD has introduced a new licensing approach that allows for the management of multiple seats floating across multiple clients. You can also float Express or PSpice "plug-ins" across multiple Capture CIS seats allowing you to access whatever capabilities are available on your network from within Capture CIS.

Known problems

None.

General notes

This section gives you information concerning:

New fields added to the OrCAD component data server (CDS) database

The following new fields are available for annotation from the ICA's OrCAD component data server (CDS) to your local preferred parts database:

  • Description

  • Supplier Name

  • Unit Price (This field has been separated from the Price Quantity field. The Price Quantity field is still available.)

You can transfer these fields by including them in your database configuration file setup.

You can use the Unit Price field in conjunction with Seagate Crystal Reports Release 6 templates to total the cost of your design. For an example of this type of template, see the example COST_QTY.RPT and ENG_BOM.RPT report files in the ORCAD\CAPTURE\SAMPLE directory. Also, for this cost totaling method to work, you will need to make sure that any price field you have in your database is set to be numerical. Make sure you annotate the Unit Price (and not the Price Quantity) to this field in your database from the internet component assistant.

New Parts distributors added to the ICA

Two new parts distributors have been added to the internet component assistant:

  • Hamilton Hallmark

  • NU Horizons

If you want the pricing from these distributors to be available in the ICA's OrCAD component data server (CDS), make sure you move them to the Selected Suppliers list in the ICA Supplier Preferences setup (available during database configuration).

Browsable files automatically located in your .DBC file directory

Capture CIS version 7.2 and Release 9 support the viewing of external file types from the CIS explorer window. CIS allows you to view any file type (PDF, HTML, etc.), as long as you have a browser installed on your system that can read the file and can be automatically launched for use as a viewer. For CIS version 7.2 a directory path, UNC, or URL had to be specified to locate a viewable file, in addition to the file's name and extension. With Release 9, CIS will automatically locate and read all viewable files that are stored in the same directory as your .DBC file.

If you do not wish to place your viewable files in the same directory as the .DBC file or use directory paths or UNC in the file names, then you will need to add the following entry to your CAPTURE.INI file:

    [CIS Browse Directories]
    Dir0=PATH

Where PATH is the path of the directory where you keep your browsable files. You can also use UNC names for the PATH entry.

For example: You create a directory on the server in which you copy all your scanned, PDF, and HTML datasheets. The path to the directory is X:\LIBRARIES\DATASHEETS.

The entry in your CAPTURE.INI should look like this:

    [CIS Browse Directories]
    Dir0=x:\libraries\datasheets

CIS Database Creation Wizard added to the Release 9 OrCAD CIS installation CD

The CIS Database Creation Wizard has been created for use with OrCAD Capture CIS to simplify and assist in the creation of your engineering part database. After you've installed the wizard, you can create a new database or update an existing database from your existing schematic design files.

The CIS Database Creation Wizard will install and run from within OrCAD Capture CIS. Starting with an existing schematic design, you can generate a new database in one of three different formats: Microsoft Access 97, Microsoft Excel, or comma delimited text. The wizard has the ability to update an existing database using the Microsoft Access 97 format only.

We highly recommend that you download the CIS Database Creation Wizard from the OrCAD Design Network at www.orcad.com to make sure you receive the latest version. However, for users who do not have direct Internet access, the wizard is available on the Release 9 CD.
